Opening Night

OPENING NIGHT. 1979

Director: John Cassevetes

How do you get one of the world's greatest actresses to appear in your low-budget independent films? Marry her!

From the smallest performances (like the stagehand who found the star admirable because she could still walk when that drunk) to that spectacular central performance by Gena Rowlands, Opening Night (1979) is an incredible film.

She did by turns annoy & inspire & cause worry & dread. That it was partially a psychological ghost story was just the right amount of "mystery" above & beyond the intense character studies. This is a riveting actorly film. Cassavetes is a film god.
